How can research explore and advance our teaching and learning in art & design?
Research - defined as accessible disciplined inquiry - is a powerful tool. Formal
research provides us with a framework for inquiry, demands an accessible and rigorous
methodology, which generates credibility of outcomes. Most importantly it demands
communication and dissemination. The pedagogic innovations in Art & Design education
have more often than not been invisible to the majority of other disciplines, and even to
ourselves. At worst this results in a lack of external credibility, and an ongoing
assumption that art education is all to do with inspiration and chance. Important factors
though these may be, the communication of good teaching and learning practices is
enabled by transparent methodology and appropriate publication. Our credibility as
educators is enhanced by research.
