These are some of the questions I have been trying to answer for the last twenty years. As artists and designers - creative inquirers - we will use visual metaphors and analogies, like "squaring the circle", to help us identify questions and articulate problems. Although these questions may ultimately be insoluble, in struggling with them we engage in a kind of alchemy, and the search for iron will sometimes lead to gold:

 

in attempting to find out about teaching styles I have been made aware of the essential importance of learning styles

in attempting to do formal research I have been made aware of the need to develop practice-based research methodologies for artists and designers

 

in attempting to practice as an artist I have been made aware of the importance of sharing those professional experiences through teaching, and

 

in attempting to teach I have learned much more than I ever taught.
